STOCKTON SPRINGS – A woman was killed Friday when her compact car was hit broadside by a pickup truck driven by Waldo County Commissioner John Hyk on Route 1.

Nineteen-year-old Amanda Mailloux of Stockton Springs was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hyk, 58, suffered facial cuts and bruises and was taken by ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital where he received treatment and then was released.

The accident occurred at 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 1 and the Muskrat Farm Road. Traffic was rerouted through Sandy Point village while police investigated and reconstructed the accident.

Peter Perkins, who lives at the corner of Muskrat Road and Route 1, was putting siding on his home when he was startled by the sound of the collision.

Perkins said he rushed to the scene and saw that the woman in the compact was seriously injured. Hyk told him the young woman pulled directly into his path, he said.

Perkins said that a vacationing emergency medical technician from New Hampshire arrived a short time later and expressed doubt that the woman would survive her injuries. The town’s emergency personnel confirmed the woman’s death when they arrived moments later, he said.

Hyk was driving north on Route 1 on a downhill grade that passes beneath a railroad overpass. The white compact car was at the stop sign on Muskrat Road and pulled directly into the path of Hyk’s Dodge pickup. When Hyk attempted to stop, his brakes locked up and he was unable to avoid the car.

Maine State Police Trooper Steve Hills is handling the investigation.
