Souviney, Zitaner shine in meet

OMAHA, Neb. – Katie Souviney of East Vassalboro and Susan Zitaner of Orrington posted ninth-place finishes to highlight Maine track and field results in the National Junior Olympic Championships last week.

Souviney, a Winslow High grad who will be attending the University of Maine on a track scholarship in the fall, came in ninth in the young women’s javelin throw with a toss of 108 feet, 4 inches. The winning throw was 129-6 by Abby Emsick of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Zitaner’s ninth was in the intermediate girls javelin throw at 102-3. Stephanie Dickey of Orrington was 13th at 97-4. The winning throw was 127-9.

Zitaner also finished 19th in the intermediate girls discus throw with a toss of 98 feet, and Dickey was 29th at 83-10. The winning throw was 143-3.
