A fair to remember
Competition was tight Monday at the Bangor State Fair, but after hours of tasting judges chose recipes by Mary Harbison of Houlton and Stacey Guerin of Glenburn for blue ribbons in the Fleichmann’s Breadworld.com and Spam Oven Roasted Turkey contests. Harbison won $120 for her Christmas Tea Ring and Guerin won $150 for her Tri Color Turkey SPAM Quick Dinner, and she will be automatically entered to win a $2,500 shopping spree at the Mall of America. For more information about the contest, visit www.statefairrecipes.com.
You go, grill
Come on, ladies, light your fire. A new Web site, www.girlsatthegrill.com, is devoted to helping women everywhere find their inner barbecue chef. It covers the basics of grilling and offers recipes, information on the latest grill products, and full menus – so you can plan a grill’s night out.
Surfing, for a song
Think of it as Carmen.com. The Opera House Restaurant Internet Cafe in Bar Harbor offers freshly baked pastries, DSL and cable Internet connections and all the opera you want in the background. Formerly The Opera House Restaurant, the cafe has gained a following among locals and tourists, according to owner Bruce Carlson. Among the attractions are Carlson’s eclairs, Danishes and cinnamon rolls, along with the comfortable, antique-filled dining room-computer room that opens to the street. The Internet cafe is located at 27 Cottage St. and is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. For information, call 288-3509.
