Orono
The Woman’s Club of Orono is taking orders for the 2003 Community Birthday Calendar. The cost is $3. Listings for birthdays, anniversaries, memorials, or meeting dates and times for organizations are 25 cents each.
Proceeds from the sale of calendars and ads go toward two scholarships and two awards for Orono High School seniors. Community projects also benefit. Past beneficiaries include the Keith Anderson Community House, the Orono Public Library and the Orono Fire Department.
The organization also supports projects of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and immediate local needs.
Those who have not been contacted or who want to be new subscribers may order a calendar by sending name, address and phone number with any listings. Include the name and date and indicate if it is birthday, anniversary or memorial. Send to Margene Smith, 330 Main St., Orono 04473, no later than Aug. 31 or call 866-2410. United Parcel Service honored Barry Harris with a service award recently. Harris has logged 35 years with UPS in Brewer. He began his career in 1967 as a package driver. As a feeder driver, he drives to Aroostook County every day.
The Church of Universal Fellowship is sponsoring a blueberry fest and cabaret at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Orono Community Center. Tickets are $5. For information, call 866-2624, or 866-2881.
A new group, Starting Over, has been formed to help individuals recover from the loss of a relationship, whether it be from death, divorce, separation, or long-term relationships.
The group’s members come from all over mid-Maine, traveling from Patten, Lincoln, Enfield, Millinocket, Bangor, Orono, Corinna, Pittsfield, Troy, Newport, Bar Harbor, Ellsworth, Bucksport and other towns. It is neither a counseling center nor a dating group, organizers explained.
“We are simply people who have experienced the same issues and are willing to help others for through these painful times. There are no dues, membership fees, et cetera, no obligations, very informal,” explained one member.
There are weekly meetings at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Orono United Methodist Church, 7 Oak St., Orono. The meetings consist of speakers, videos, presentations, group discussions, etc. In addition, there are also social activities, concerts, movies, theater, picnics, hikes, biking and more. The only criteria is a desire to try something, organizers said.

Winterport
The annual Blueberry and Bluegrass Concert will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, on the Union Meeting House lawn. The bluegrass band Evergreen will perform. Blueberry pies and lemonade will be available. The Winterport Business Association has sponsored the event since 1859. For information, call 941-9476.
