CUMBERLAND CENTER – Jesse Speirs of Bangor won his first Maine Junior Golf Championship with a 4 and 3 victory over two-time defending champion Shawn Warren Wednesday at Val Halla Golf and Recreation Center.
The 15-year-old Speirs, who nearly won the Greater Bangor Open on Saturday, never trailed in his match with Warren in the 15-17 age group.
Speirs had defeated Chris Bixby 8 and 7 in the morning semifinals to advance to the afternoon final.
In the 13-14 age group final, Jordan Kelly defeated Jackie Royal 3 and 1, and Johnny Hayes of Cape Elizabeth had to go 19 holes to defeat Sam Weiss of Blue Hill for the 12-and-under crown.
Speirs and Warren head the Maine team which will compete in the New England Junior Amateur Championship to be held Aug. 19-20 at Agawam Hunt in East Providence, R.I.
The other four team members will be determined by the lowest scoring averages among the Maine State Golf Association, New England PGA, and United States Golf Association tournaments held through the completion of the Maine Open on Aug. 16.
