LINCOLNVILLE – The 2002 Yankee Woodlot Forestry Camp will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 4 at the Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center. This is the 20th year for the program, which began in 1982 as a follow-up to the 10-part “Yankee Woodlot” television series produced by Maine Public Broadcasting Network and Cooperative Extension.
According to extension educator Leslie Hyde, there are many excellent video programs and fact sheets on forest management, but few opportunities, short of going to a four-year forestry school, to gain hands-on, how-to experience in managing woodlands. The forestry camp was designed to respond to this need.
The program is especially useful for landowners, woods workers, land trust volunteers, town forest personnel and others who have responsibility to care for forestland. Hyde said the course also is helpful for those who are working with a professional forester and wish to better understand what the forester does and why.
The goal of Yankee Woodlot Forestry Camp is to increase the acreage in Maine that is managed for long-term sustainability.
Registration fee is $300 for Maine residents, $350 for nonresidents, and includes meals, lodging, cruising stick and educational materials. Financial aid is available for those who would like to attend this year’s camp and need some assistance. Contact the Tanglewood office for a financial aid application.
