BANGOR – A 64-year-old Orono man was sentenced Thursday in Penobscot County Superior Court to 31/2 years in prison and four years of probation on two counts of unlawful sexual contact with minors.
All but 60 days of the sentence was suspended.
Richard Sails pleaded no contest to a Class C violation of the law, defined as touching the genitals of a minor with the hand, according to Penobscot County Deputy District Attorney Michael Roberts.
Sails’ young victims attended the sentencing before Justice Jeffrey Hjelm.
According to court documents, one girl was molested in early May, the other in early June of this year.
One of the girls reported the incident to Orono police and that investigation led to the other girl, Roberts said Friday.
The case moved rapidly because Sails accepted responsibility for his actions and waived indictment, according to Roberts.
Sails was arrested July 19 and released on $10,000 unsecured bail.
Conditions of his probation include paying counseling fees for his victims, having no unsupervised contact with minor children and registering as a violent sexual predator upon his release.
