PORTLAND – People who feed the pigeons downtown could soon face hefty fines.

The City Council approved a ban on feeding wildlife by a vote of 6-2 Monday night. The ban covers the downtown district, between Cumberland Avenue and Commercial Street, from Franklin Street to Longfellow Square.

The ban takes effect in 30 days.

It’s not just pigeons that will have to look elsewhere for a handout. The ban also includes squirrels and gulls.

Councilor Peter O’Donnell proposed the ban because several downtown businesses complained that pigeons were an annoyance, especially at establishments with outdoor seating.

Some councilors who voted for the ban wondered whether it would be effective or appropriate to have police officers watching out for pigeon-feeders.

Violators will receive a warning but could face fines of $50 to $500 if they persist.
