LEWISTON – A woman convicted of killing her 2-month-old son by stuffing a sock into his mouth was jailed for assaulting the father who also was imprisoned for assaulting the infant boy.
An officer, alerted to a disturbance, watched through a window as Sherry Cotton hit and clawed at Rocky Crowley in his garage, police said.
Cotton was charged with domestic assault and held at the Androscoggin County Jail.
Cotton, 28, spent three years in prison after being convicted in 1994 in the death of her son, Chase Vincent Crowley. Rocky Crowley spent five years in prison for assaulting the infant, who had multiple broken bones.
The couple maintained their relationship through the boy’s death, their trials, and the prison sentences.
Police said the assault happened Monday, three days after a judge lifted a condition that barred the two from contact.
Justice Robert Clifford removed the condition Friday when Cotton faced a charge that she violated her probation by smoking marijuana.
She admitted to the charge, and Clifford determined the time she already had been jailed was sufficient punishment. Cotton used the opportunity to ask the judge whether he would allow her to see Crowley.
Clifford granted her request.
Cotton and Crowley dispute the police’s version of what happened Monday night.
Sgt. Mike McGonagle said the first officer on the scene walked to a window while waiting for backup and saw Cotton beating Crowley.
Crowley said Cotton yelled and cursed, but she never hit him. Cotton, too, insisted she never touched Crowley. “I know better. He’s three times my size,” she said.
The couple believes police are out to get Cotton because of her history.
Cotton continues to maintain her innocence in the death of her son. She contends his 1991 death was caused by sudden infant death syndrome and that the 27 rib and leg fractures detected in his autopsy were the result of a disease that made his bones extremely brittle.
