Fire crews from Hampden, Hermon and Newburgh went to the scene of a fire at the Sawyer Environmental Recovery Facility near Dysart’s Truck Stop on Thursday night.
According to Lt. Dale Stout of the Hermon Fire Department, this fire marked the second time this year the trash had caught fire. Stout said the trash, because it is compacted and gets hot in the summer, can spark a fire “every once in a while.” He did not know the exact cause of the fire, though.
Crews were called to the scene about 9 p.m.
Brewer police arrested a transient Thursday morning after he allegedly broke into some vehicles at the Stable Inn Motel at 448 Wilson St.
According to police, Anthony Herda, 59, had been living at the motel and patrons had observed him perusing vehicles in the parking lot the last two days. At around 7 a.m. Wednesday, a motel employee saw Herda enter a vehicle and called police.
Herda then went to the Big Apple convenience store at South Main Street where he drank some milk and left without paying for it. Cpl. Jason Moffitt apprehended Herda at the store.
Moffitt said in the report that Herda “became irate” when asked if he had stolen a green jacket and some stuffed animals from vehicles at the motel. Herda allegedly said the motel patrons were terrorists and that he could not be charged with theft of the stuffed animals because they were still on motel property. He was in possession of the jacket and had the stuffed animals “stashed” on motel grounds.
Moffitt arrested Herda on charges of burglary to a motor vehicle and theft.
The Corinth Fire Department went Thursday afternoon to a 1-acre brush fire in Bradford started by a skidder.
According to Capt. Randy Crooker of the Corinth Fire Department, a man was hauling logs out of the woods near Route 221 when the skidder caught fire and sparked the brush fire at 4:20 p.m. Crooker did not know who owned the machine.
Crooker said the fire burned about 1 acre and demolished the machine. Crews worked for about an hour fighting the fire. No one was injured.
“It was a total loss,” Crooker said of the log hauler.
