CALAIS – The grand opening of the Calais Skatepark will be held today at 2 p.m. at the park.
Planners worked for several years to make the skate park a reality and now it is referred to as “The Easternmost Skatepark in the U.S. and the Park that Youth Built.”
The skate park was built last year at the DiCenzo Complex, near the city’s recreation fields. The park has several 6- to 8-foot long ramps ranging in height from 4 to 8 feet. Installing them was a community effort.
On any given day one can see boys and girls zipping up a ramp, jumping into the air and landing on their skateboards, and today will be no exception as there will be plenty of demonstrations.
A professional demonstration of BMX stunt bike riders and professional skateboarders from New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, called “We the People,” will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the park. There also will be photo opportunities and a chance to collect autographs during and after the event.
The public is invited.
