Designed by Cindy Taylor, this quilt is a full-size Maine Sampler Quilt in shades of blue. Raffle tickets to win this quilt are available in advance at the Bangor Visitor & Conventions Bureau on Main Street in Bangor and they will be sold at the festival Aug. 23, 24 and 25. The raffle winner will be chosen and announced on Sunday at 5 p.m. just before the end of the festival. Next year’s National Folk Festival Raffle Quilt will be made during this year’s festival.
Members of four local quilting guild chapters will demonstrate their craft as they work on next year’s quilt. Visitors are invited to assist by sewing a stitch onto the quilt from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The Pine Tree Quilters Guild is Maine’s nonprofit quilting guild with over 1,700 members, including 63 chapters. The purpose of the PTQG is to promote quilting through workshops, chapter activities, the Patchwork Press newsletter, education programs and community activities such as the annual state quilt show and chapter and area quilt shows. Those interested in finding out more about the PTQG are encouraged to visit its Web site at www.mainequilts.org where they will find information on Maine quilt shops, special events, quilt auctions and minigrants. The PTQG also sponsors the Maine Quilt Heritage Committee, established in 1987 for the purpose of preserving our quilt heritage. The committee, in turn, sponsors a series of documentation days where owners bring their quilts for physical analysis and the recording of information about the quilt and quilt maker. To date, the committee has documented over 2,000 quilts in over 35 locations.
