Howland crash kills 10-year-old Fairfield boy

HOWLAND – A 10-year-old Fairfield boy was killed when he was ejected from a sport utility vehicle that veered into the Interstate 95 median and rolled over several times, police said.

Maine State Police did not say whether Nathan P. Morin was wearing a seat belt before he was ejected from the 1998 GMC SUV during the crash early Saturday.

The vehicle driven by Andrea Morin, 30, Nathan’s mother, was heading south when she apparently fell asleep. She awoke after driving into the median, then overcorrected and lost control. The SUV rolled over several times near interstate mile marker 217.

Two other passengers in the SUV were hospitalized.

Kristen Whitney, 11, was taken to Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln but was transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor where she was in critical condition Sunday. Michael Whitney, 14, also was taken to Penobscot Valley Hospital, but was treated and released by Sunday afternoon. Officials did not immediately say where the two children are from or identify their parents.

No information was available as to whether Andrea Morin had been hospitalized or if she suffered any injuries.

Nathan Morin would have been a fifth-grader at Benton Elementary School this fall and had been attending a literacy camp at the school this summer, according to information provided by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Morin is survived by his mother and father, David Lagueu, his sister Skye Morin, all of Fairfield; and his stepsister, Lindsey Wollard of England.

Correction: A story about an automobile accident in Howland that ran in Monday, Aug. 12, editions incorrectly identified one of the injured victims. The 11-year-old injured was a boy named Christian Whitney. He remains hospitalized with a fractured skull and collapsed lung, according to his father.
