BANGOR – When the opening ceremonies of the Senior League Baseball World Series ended Sunday, the team from Spring, Texas, went back to their Husson College dormitory rooms for a nice, long nap.

The Southwest champions needed some extra rest after a grueling, 20-hour trip Saturday from Colorado to Bangor. But they appeared fresh Sunday evening.

The Texas squad clubbed Manila, Philippines, pitcher Joannard Pareja for 16 hits on its way to a convincing 14-1 first-round victory at Mansfield Stadium. The game was shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.

Texas plays Curacao, the Latin American winner, at 1 p.m. today. The Philippines, the Asia Pacific champ, faces South Vineland, N.J., at 8 p.m.

Spring wrapped up its Regional title at 11 p.m. Friday, then awoke at 6 a.m. Saturday to begin its cross-country trek.

“We flew all day,” explained Spring manager Chad Watson. “It was a rough, rough trip… but when you consider the alternative of not getting to come, it was well worth it.”

Fatigue didn’t appear to be a factor for Texas, which scored seven times in the first inning and never looked back.

“I was tired all day today,” admitted Spring reliever Brandon Watson, who pitched three innings of three-hit relief. “I slept as much as I could and I’m still pretty tired.”

The team had plenty of strength to swing the bats, led by Michael Kiger. He went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two singles and five RBIs.

“We always hit the ball good,” said Kiger, the No. 8 batter. “That was the first time I hit the ball good [lately].”

Starter Matt Mendel pitched two no-hit innings, striking out four, and helped the cause with three singles and two RBIs.

“It takes all the nervousness away,” Mendel said of the offense. “Our offense backed me up with runs, so I was pretty confident on the mound today.”

Braxton Watson contributed an RBI double and a single for Spring, which capitalized on six Manila errors. The Philippines team committed four in the first inning, when Menndel and Kiger stroked RBI singles and J.B. Watkins hit an RBI double.

Andrew Arellano stroked two singles for Manila, including a two-out, RBI hit in the fifth to spoil the shutout.
