BANGOR – Oh, Canada!
The team from LaSalle, Ontario, appeared headed for victory Monday during the second day of the Senior League World Series at Mansfield Stadium as the Canadians took a comfortable 10-3 lead into the sixth inning.
Before the inning was over, the South Region champions from Boynton Beach, Fla., had manufactured a thrilling nine-run rally that carried them to a 12-10 victory over LaSalle.
Boynton Beach takes a 1-1 World Series record into Tuesday’s 8 p.m. game against host team Bangor, Maine (0-1). LaSalle (1-1) faces Europe entry Moscow, Russia (0-1) at 1 p.m.
Coach Dan Wilson’s Boynton Beach bunch was subdued heading into the bottom of the sixth. But once the South squad got a bit of momentum, Canada couldn’t stop it.
“You know what, we played like that all year,” Wilson said, citing the South Region championship game during which Boynton Beach trailed 5-0 but came back to win. “We’ve been there several times before. That’s why I told the guys, ‘don’t get down when we get down.'”
Stephen Vento posted two hits and eight of the nine batters scored during the uprising. Jeremy Griffiths lashed a game-tying, three-run triple and Vento laced a two-run double to provide the winning margin.
“It wasn’t looking good at all,” Vento admitted. “After we had the bases loaded I was like, this is our inning, we’re going to take this.”
Boynton Beach sent 15 batters to the plate against three different Ontario pitchers, who combined to issue four walks while throwing two wild pitches and hitting two batters.
“Once one hit goes, it just keeps on going,” Griffiths said. “That’s what a rally is. Our team just woke up at the World Series and instead of ‘wow, we’re here,’ said ‘let’s play baseball.'”
LaSalle manager Ralph Hall did not attend the postgame press conference, but told a tournament worker that no team he had coached in 25 years had suffered such a loss.
Boynton Beach survived despite committing six errors. Dolan Owens surrendered 13 hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out 10, before A.J. Howard got the last five outs to earn the victory.
Luis Maldonado tripled and doubled and Griffiths doubled twice for the winners. Anthony Orr and Vento each doubled and singled with two RBIs and Shawn Arena singled twice.
Anthony Dufour paced LaSalle’s 15-hit attack with four singles and two RBIs, while Mark Metyzynsky rapped a double and two singles good for three RBIs. Vance Santia doubled and singled, while Jason Lauzon and Jarrod Pandolfo notched two singles each.
