Beyond boiled

It’s not exactly the Iron Chef – the contestants already know what the secret ingredient will be – but competition will still be pretty tight at the Blaine House on Thursday. Nine Maine chefs will square off for the Great Taste of Maine Lobster Governor’s Tasting and Culinary Competition. This year’s theme is “Simply Sensational Lobster Salad.” Chefs chosen for the competition are: Nancy Bishop of Waco Diner, Eastport; Charles Butler of the Waterfront Restaurant in Camden; James Byron of Bates College Dining Services in Lewiston; Stephen Carson of Weathervane Seafoods in Kittery; Danie Connolly of Absolutely Perfect! in Kennebunk; Rob Schoonmaker of Artzy-Partzy Catering in Kennebunk; Keiko Takahashi of Oh! Bento in Portland; Robert McGowan of Heritage House in Skowhegan; and Thomas McBreen of Sebasco Harbor Resort in Sebasco Estates. Chef Nathan Beriau of Cotton Street in Portland entered the pictured Fresh Maine Lobster Stack in last year’s brunch competition. For recipes or more information, visit www.mainelobsterpromo.com.

Different location

Something Different has become so popular that it has outgrown its current location on Union Street, which will close at 3 p.m. Friday. The shop, known for its scrumptious sandwiches, will move to Broadway Shopping Plaza and reopen at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26. The new location won’t have a drive-through, but it will have expanded room for seating, an espresso and cappuccino bar, and will sell whole quiches and baked goods to take home. For more information,

call 945-5600.

Have food, will travel

Tom Gutow of the Castine Inn will host this year’s Moveable Feast fund-raiser for the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association. The event, which takes place on Sunday, Oct. 20, will feature cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a variety of courses made from organic, locally grown and raised food. Among the featured chefs are Sam Hayward of Fore Street in Portland, Michael Gagne of Robinhood Free Meetinghouse in Georgetown, John Hicate of Arborvine in Blue Hill, Elmer Beal of The Burning Tree in Otter Creek, and David Grant of Aubergine in Portland. Tickets cost $150 per person plus wine, and space is limited. For more information or to reserve a ticket, call 568-4142 or visit www.mofga.org.
