PORTLAND – A Cumberland County grand jury has indicted a Portland woman for allegedly assaulting two police officers, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and filing a false rape report against one of the officers.

Sianne Bermudez, 23, said the officer raped her in a police van on the way to jail Feb. 21.

Bermudez had been arrested in connection with an apparent break-in. She allegedly kicked two of the officers and bit one.

Police Chief Michael Chitwood said police had to investigate the allegations against the officer as they would those against any other person.

Detectives took the officer’s clothing, samples of his hair and fluids and questioned him and inspected the van for evidence, Chitwood said.

The investigation turned up nothing to support Bermudez’s claims, Chitwood said, and Bermudez later recanted.

Chitwood said the indictment exonerates the officer completely.
