Children’s day offers fun events in Hampden

HAMPDEN – Hampden Children’s Day, to be held rain or shine on Saturday, Aug. 17, will have as its theme, “The Spirit of America.”

The event kicks off with a pancake breakfast 7-9 a.m. at the Kiwanis Civic Center. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children under 12.

KidsPeace New England Treatment Foster Care Agency will provide decorations so that youngsters may decorate their bicycles or other wheels at 9:30 a.m. in the TDS Telecom parking lot. Children are reminded to bring their helmets.

Parade lineup is at 10 a.m., and the parade at 11 a.m., sponsored by the Bangor Daily News. Forrest Auto Body will sponsor, in part, the Keystone Kops.

Children’s activities, scheduled for noon-4 p.m., include:

. Zach the Waiter, juggling and making balloon art, sponsored by the Ground Round.

. Kiwanis field games beginning at 1 p.m. on the baseball outfield. Awards afterward.

. Kiwanis quarter booth games.

. Hampden Recreation Department Bounce House, sponsored by the White House Motel.

. Maine Discovery Museum providing face painting.

. Hampden Children’s Day Information Booth, raffling an Old Town Canoe kayak.

. Craft table by “A Family for Me.”

. 4-H exhibit.

. “Beat the Goalie,” with Gary Walker, noon-2 p.m., presented by Maine Sports Complex. All participants eligible for face painting. Prizes for those who beat the goalie.

. Top Hat Dancers performing in the Weatherbee School gym.

. Story time with the Edythe Dyer Library, 1:15-2 p.m. in the Weatherbee School gym.

Chuck Foster’s All-Hit Video Dance, sponsored by Pine Tree Landfill, will be held 7-8:30 p.m. and 9-11 p.m.

Raffle drawings and announcements are scheduled for 8:20 p.m.

Blue Hill Pyrotechnics, which has donated fireworks for the occasion, will present fireworks 8:30-9 p.m.

Available food will include: Hampden Children’s Day french fries and doughboys; lemonade sponsored and served by RH Foster; VFW Auxiliary sandwiches, hot dogs, soda and strawberry shortcake; Kiwanis Lunch Wagon hamburgers, hot dogs, soda, chips and coffee; and the DARE parent committee’s ice cream floats.

Hampden Congregational Church will hold its annual supper. Featured will be spaghetti, lasagna, casseroles, 5-6:30 p.m. at the church at 101 Main Road North. The cost is $5.50 for adults, $2.50 for children under 12.

Committee members said they wanted to acknowledge Hampden Public Safety, Public Works and other town employees for their assistance, and Susan Bruno. Dozens of businesses have helped make the event possible.

Cleanup day for Hampden Children’s Day will be held Sunday, Aug. 18. Volunteers are welcome.
