Curacao’s bats hot in win over Manila Martis fires two-hit shutout with 11Ks

BANGOR – Add this to your list of ways to know things are going your team’s way during the Senior League World Series.

You’re a pitcher (like Curacao’s Shairon Martis). It’s 95 degrees out. And you’ve still got to head out to the bullpen while your team is batting, just to stay warm.

On Wednesday, Martis spent nearly as much time in the pen keeping warm as he did on the hill, as he fired a two-hit gem to lead the Latin America champs to a 25-0 win over Manila, Philippines at Mansfield Stadium.

Martis, who pitched to two batters in a Tuesday win (hitting one and walking the other), struck out 11 in the five-inning affair and allowed just two baserunners.

“Today, I felt very good,” said the 15-year-old Martis, whose fastball was clocked at 86 mph in the fifth. “Yesterday, I was no good.”

Curacao manager Norval Faneyte said one key to Martis’ success was the fact that he didn’t just sit around as his teammates feasted on Manila pitching.

“These boys, they are children, although they look like men,” Faneyte said. “You have to show them, you have to tell them. Otherwise, he would be sitting here [in the dugout], and go from here to the mound. And then you have problems.”

In a game with a box score full of crooked numbers, one stat will sum up Curacao’s dominance nicely: In the fourth inning, the Latin America champs sent 19 men to the plate. Manila sent just 17 to the plate in five innings.

The win gives Curacao a 2-1 record in pool play, while Manila drops to 0-3.

Curacao took a 7-0 lead into the top of the fourth, then exploded for 14 runs on seven hits to blow the game open.

Another example of how good things were going: Four pinch hitters batted twice apiece in the inning for Curacao.
