As the operator of an assisted living facility for seniors, I know firsthand that the shortage of nurses and other health care professionals is growing more acute each year. Having previously worked as a registered nurse, I understand that nursing jobs aren’t always easy, but they’re rewarding and critically important to our health care system.

Given the ongoing shortage, it was encouraging to read about John Baldacci’s efforts to pass the Nurse Reinvestment Act (BDN, July 27-28). This legislation, which Rep. Baldacci cosponsored, recently became law. It offers a variety of incentives to attract more students to nursing programs, and to keep them working in the field.

The next time you’re wondering if Congress ever takes action to benefit average people, remember the Nurse Reinvestment Act. This new law should help to increase the number of qualified nurses in long-term care facilities, hospitals, clinics and working for home health care agencies. As the percentage of older Americans continues to increase, Baldacci’s efforts will prove more and more important.
