McGary’s OT goal lifts Hawks

LIMESTONE – Shanna McGary’s second goal of the game at 3:29 of the second overtime Friday gave Hodgdon a 2-1, double-overtime soccer victory over Limestone the team’s mutual season opener.

Hodgdon had taken the 1-0 lead 6:13 into the second half when McGary scored her first goal of the season on an assist by Heather Martin. Limestone countered 12 minutes later when Ashley Brooker tied the game on an assist by Lindsey Beaulieu.

Nikki Michaud stopped 15 of the 21 shots she faced for Limestone and Lindsay Stewart stopped eight of 10 shots for Hodgdon.

Cen. Aroostook 3, SAHS 1

At Dyer Brook, Jenna Robinson scored a goal in each half as the Panthers of Mars Hill opened the season with a win.

Samantha Brewer scored an unassisted goal for Central Aroostook, while Angie Brewer notched an assist. Brittany Lundeen made three saves on four shots.

Mindy Watson scored unassisted for Southern Aroostook. Audrey Charette and Brandi Crandall combined to make five saves on eight shots.

Van Buren 4, Washburn 0

At Van Buren, Sarah Lajoie’s two goals led the Crusaders to victory in teams’ mutual opener.

Lajoie scored the first and last goals of the game for Van Buren on assists from Micah LaPlante and Amber Martin, respectively. Amy Vaillancourt scored on an assist from Natalie Cormier. LaPlante notched the final goal on another Cormier assist.

Danielle Gagnon stopped one of the two shots she faced while for Van Buren and Jamie Abar turned away 10 of 23 shots for Washburn.

Wisdom 10, Easton 1

At Easton, Christa Lizotte notched her first four goals of the season for Wisdom of St. Agatha in her team’s season opener.

Lizotte scored three goals in the first half, when Michelle Bourgoin also had a goal, and added a goal and an assist after halftime.

Cindy Chamberland scored twice in the second half and assisted on two goals by Kristen Marquis. Heather Anderson tallied one goal, while Justine Tardiff, provided an assist.

Shannon Berube stopped five of eight shots for the Pioneers.

Nina Alexander scored for the Bears and Toni Ladner had 15 saves on 34 shots.

Boys soccer

So. Aroostook 2, CAHS 0

At Dyer Brook, Corey Edkins and Zac Austin scored goals as the Warriors opened the season with a win over the Panthers.

Edkins scored 10 minutes into the match off a Tom St. Pierre’s cross and Austin scored a second-half goal off a Jared Grant corner kick. Jeff Boutilier stopped five of seven shots for Southern Aroostook.

Allen Crew made 10 saves on 24 shots for Central Aroostook of Mars Hill.

Van Buren 2, Washburn 0

At Van Buren, a pair of goals by Tyler Hews proved all the offense the Crusaders needed.

Hews scored both Van Buren goals in the second period with the first coming on a Jesse Parent assist and the second on an assist from Louiz Sadre. Sean Violette stopped all three shots he faced.

Washburn’s Jason Thompson blocked nine of Van Buren’s 20 shots.

Easton 4, Wisdom 0

At Easton, the Bears started their 2002 season off with a win as James Desmond scored a pair of second-half goals.

Kyle Wells scored a first-half goal, then Desmond tallied nine minutes apart in the second half. Nate Harris scored on a penalty kick.

Danny Warren had seven saves for Easton and Kenny Corriveau stopped 18 shots for Wisdom of St. Agatha.

Houlton 0, Madawaska 0 (2OT)

At Houlton, the Shiretowners and the Owls fought to a 0-0 tie after two halves of regulation and two periods of overtime.

Eric O’Connell of Houlton stopped all 16 shots he faced and Madawaska’s Jon Cowic made 11 saves.
