TURNER – A 21-year-old New Jersey man was killed in a one-car accident Thursday night.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department said Timothy Smith was killed when the 1981 BMW in which he was a passenger became airborne, struck some trees and landed on its roof about 10:15 p.m.

Sheriff’s officials said Matthew Turgeon, 23, of Canton was driving and apparently failed to stop at the intersection of Harlow Hill Road and Route 219.

Investigators said speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the accident.
