PRESQUE ISLE – A motorcycle-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon sent two central Aroostook County residents to the hospital.

Dale Saucier, 39, and Lori Cote, 37, both of Presque Isle were taken to the Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle after their motorcycle struck a service truck at the intersection of Academy and Dudley streets.

According to Sgt. Joey Seeley of the Presque Isle Police Department, Saucier and Cote were traveling west on Academy Street on Saucier’s 1998 Suzuki motorcycle just before 2 p.m.

At the same time, a Verizon New England service truck operated by Steven Hardwick, 39, of Limestone was at the stop sign where Academy intersects with Dudley Street, Seeley said.

The officer said Hardwick indicated he looked both ways before proceeding through the intersection, but said he did not see Saucier approaching on the motorcycle.

Saucier attempted to stop the motorcycle when he saw the truck and locked the brakes, causing him to lose control and collide with the front of the truck.

Saucier was trapped for a time under the truck, Seeley said, and was removed with the aid of members of the Presque Isle Fire Department.

He was transported by ambulance to the hospital with shoulder and head injuries and abrasions. Cote was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered injuries to her arms and hip. Neither motorcycle passenger was wearing a helmet, Seeley said.

Hardwick, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured.

The cause of the accident was listed as driver inattention and failure to yield, Seeley said, and no charges are pending.

Patrolman Brian McQuarrie of the Presque Isle Police Department was the lead investigator of the accident and was assisted by Seeley, the Presque Isle Fire Department and the Maine State Police.

The accident shut down Dudley and Academy Streets for about an hour and a half.
