Bangor

The Bangor Theological Seminary Festival Choir spent 10 days in June touring and singing in Austria and Hungary.

A group of 42 students, church members and friends from Bangor Theological Seminary, Brewer and Orrington churches, the University of Maine and Pittsfield, and others from Vermont, Nebraska and North Dakota took the gospel music of America to Europe, said Larry Lamond, BTS student and choir member. Their repertoire included “Deep River,” “A City Called Heaven,” “Jerusalem, My Happy Home,” Mozart’s “Ave Verum” and Bruckner’s “Locus Iste.”

Choir members from the Bangor area are Anna and Gene Frizzel of Brewer; Marilyn Petit, Jason Anderson, and Jim, Laura, Emily and Carolyn Artesani of Orono; Peg and Lisa Swett of Orrington; Laurie McQuarrie of Glenburn; Ron Sherwin, Sarah McQuarrie and Beverly Wilson of Bangor; and Thalia McMoran of Lincoln. Choir members from Bangor Theological Seminary are Stephanie St. John, Cindy Lufkin, Patricia Ferguson and Larry Lamond.

In Austria the choir sang at the Dom in Salzburg, St. Florian’s cathedral in Linz and in a church in Stammersdorf, near Vienna. In Hungary, they performed at St. Emery’s church in Budapest.

Highlights of the tour, according to Lamond, included visits to the Mozart House in Salzburg and to Anton Bruckner’s grave under the great golden organ in Linz.

For the last three years, Manna has collected school supplies for local children. Other social agencies appeal to Manna for assistance in supplying these items. Parents who are on fixed incomes or are “working poor” sign up to receive school supplies they cannot afford to buy because clothing and sneakers are a greater priority.

“Our children are important and their education is essential to their growth. It is very embarrassing to a child to have to go to school and find that they do not have the tools needed to do the schoolwork,” said Manna director Bill Rae.

Items needed for kindergarten through grade 12 are pens with black, blue or red ink; colored pencils; backpacks; pencils and pencil boxes; crayons; regular three-ring binders, 11/2 inches and 2 inches; paper, spiral-bound, single-subject notebooks; thin markers, subject dividers and glue sticks.

The deadline for donating items is Sept. 9. Manna is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. For information, call 990-2870.

The Maine Discovery Museum will hold its first Time of Wonder Children’s Book Festival Oct. 4-6. During the festival, the museum will honor “The Other Side,” by Jacqueline Woodson, illustrated by E.B. Lewis, with the museum’s book award. Lewis, who has illustrated more than 20 children’s books, including two Coretta Scott King Honor Books, will accept the award, visit area schools and appear at the museum.

“Books – Bringing Us Together is the theme of the festival.” Events include author book signings, workshops and a book swap.

A free child safety seat checkup is scheduled 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at Bangor Fire Department, Main Street.

More than 90 percent of children riding in cars are restrained incorrectly, according to the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety. With the new booster seat law taking effect Jan. 1, 2003, parents are urged to have a technician advise them on the safest way to transport their children.

The checkup is sponsored by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, Bangor Fire Department and Maine Child Passenger Safety Technicians.

Glenburn

The Glenburn Recreation Program wrapped up its summer program Aug. 9 after eight weeks of activities.

The children played games, made crafts and snacks, and went on outings to locations such as Fort Knox in Prospect, Leonard’s Mills in Bradley, and Peaks Kenny State Park in Dover-Foxcroft.

The program is holding sign-up for field hockey, grades six through eight, said recreation director Carey Bessey. The deadline is Aug. 23, and the telephone number to call is 945-3119. Space is limited.

Soccer registration for kindergarten through grade eight will be held for one night only, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the Glenburn Elementary School gym.

Hampden

Hampden Historical Society will hold Heritage Day 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Kinsley House, 83 Main Road South.

Events include canoe building, blacksmithing, apple cider pressing, weaving, quilting, rug braiding, chair caning, wool spinning, custom fly rod making, and tours of the Hannibal Hamlin law office and the historical society’s archives and museum. Baked goods will be sold.

Children’s activities include games and candle dipping.
