BANGOR – The public is invited to discuss issues related to end-of-life care at the Center for Family Business on the Husson College Campus.

Most people say that they would prefer to die at home among family and friends, yet 80 percent spend their last hours in a hospital.

“Advanced Planning for End-of-Life” will be presented from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Husson. Bangor attorney Leigh McCarthy of Rudman & Winchell will provide information about advanced directives and health care powers of attorney.

Topics will include:

. What an advanced directive is.

. What a person can and cannot do.

. How to set up an advanced directive or health care power of attorney.

. What to do with it once it is in place.

. What can happen when the instrument is not in place early enough.

“What is Palliative Care?” has been scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26. The session will explore the similarities and differences between palliative care and hospice care, and what options are available to residents of long-term care facilities.

Presenters will be Dr. Alan Garber, director of palliative care at Eastern Maine Medical Center; registered nurse Leanne Sprague, of Hospice of Eastern Maine; and registered nurse Trudy Stone of Ross Manor.
