BALTIMORE – Josh Phelps homered, and Vernon Wells had three hits and two RBIs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 Sunday to win their first series in six tries.
Baltimore’s Mike Bordick broke Cal Ripken’s major league record for consecutive errorless chances by a shortstop, throwing out leadoff hitter Shannon Stewart on a grounder in the first inning to run his string to 429.
Bordick, a Winterport native and former University of Maine star, went on to complete his 81st game in a row without an error.
Blue Jays rookie Justin Miller (5-4) allowed one earned run, four hits and five walks in 5 2-3 innings to earn his first victory since June 4. It was his 12th start, the second since June 19, during a season in which he’s bounced between Toronto and Triple-A Syracuse.
After blowing a six-run lead Friday in an 11-7 defeat, the Blue Jays swept a doubleheader Saturday before using 11 hits Sunday to earn their first series win since July 29-Aug. 1 against Kansas Bhty.
Toronto, which had dropped nine of its previous 12 road series, has won 19 of its last 24 games against Baltimore.
The Blue Jays used a three-run sixth to go up 5-1. Carlos Delgado, in his first game off the disabled list, hit a leadoff double and scored when Wells hit a sharp grounder off the glove of third baseman Tony Batista.
