MACHIAS – An expanded early-care and education center is scheduled to open in Machias at the end of September.
Child and Family Opportunities Inc. plans to begin serving children ages 6 weeks to 5 years, beginning Sept. 30.
The center, which incorporates child care and Head Start services to families of all incomes will be located on the Marshfield Road in the old wreath factory owned by Steve and Judy Gay.
CFO’s center will be housed in the newly renovated facility next door to the Washington County Children’s Program, a nonprofit providing early intervention and school-age support services for children and families. The program is also planning an open house in mid-October, when the public will be invited to see the facility, meet the staff and hear about the programs.
The center will have three classrooms, one for part-day, part-year preschool Head Start children; one for preschool children needing full-day, full-year child care services in addition to Head Start services; and one for infants and toddlers needing full-day, full-year child care in addition to Early Head Start services.
The part-day, part-year preschool Head Start program is free, and the child care programs are assessed a weekly fee based on a sliding fee scale and determined by each family’s size and income. Families are urged to get their applications in as soon as possible.
