Owners say Speedway 95 available for right price $2 million bid might change ‘not for sale’ status

Del Merritt and Alice Baker, co-owners of Hermon’s Speedway 95 since 1991, said rumors that the track is for sale are erroneous.

However, Merritt said that could change if somebody offered them the right price: $2 million.

“We haven’t put it on the market but I wouldn’t mind selling it,” said Merritt, who has been affiliated with the track in some capacity since 1969. “If somebody was interested in it for the right price and they intended to take it to the next level, I wouldn’t mind stepping down.

“I wouldn’t sell it for less than $2 million and I won’t lease it. So I guess we’ll have it another 30 years,” quipped Merritt.

“I’d like to stay with it. It’s a [nice] hobby. But if somebody came along with a lot of money, I might sell it,” agreed Baker.

Merritt and Baker are attached to the track but they admitted that they can’t put the money into it they would like.

“We do what we can,” said Baker.

“We’re doing our best to run the facility. We both have other jobs and put money back into the track,” said Merritt. “But I’d like to see somebody buy the track who has deeper pockets than we do. I’d like to see them add more seating, put in some VIP booths, pave the parking lot, finish off the pit area, build a new office building and pave the track all the way to the tire walls to get rid of the dust.”

He added that “I’d like to see all the tires gone [from the track wall].”

The 57-year-old Merritt also said he hopes a wealthy buyer for the track comes along in the not-so-distant future “because I’d like to see it [upgraded] and be able to enjoy it. And I want to be able to do some of the things I’d like to do before I’m too old.”

The track is having a decent year thanks to the Wacky Wednesday racing for entry level cars and pick-up trucks.

But Merritt said they are almost doing too well on Wednesdays.

“We try to keep the program to two hours but we can’t. We have 60 cars in the small enduros class,” said Merritt. “We have 20 in the women’s division and 27 large enduros. We’re light in the pick-up trucks.”

But Merritt would readily admit that having too many cars is a nice problem to have.

It simply requires more than two hours to race with a packed card.

The Pro All-Stars Series returns to Speedway 95 on Saturday night for the Pine Tree 150. It will be the 12th of 15 points races. Time trials begin at 5:45.

Scott Chubbuck won the earlier PASS race at Speedway 95.

Turner’s Ben Rowe will enter the race with a comfortable 100-point lead over Hallowell’s Johnny Clark. He has 2374 points to Clark’s 2274.

South Paris’ Sam Sessions is third with 2268 points and rounding out the top five are Cushing’s Chuck Lachance (2246) and Dave Gorveatt of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (2224).

Spud Speedway still sitting idle

Caribou’s Spud Speedwayremains in limbo.

This is the second summer that it hasn’t had racing as owner Ralph Nason waits for a solid offer from somebody to lease or buy the track from him.

“I received an offer recently but it wasn’t what I wanted,” said Nason.
