Matt Kinney will not be called up by the Minnesota Twins until at least after the Pacific Coast League playoffs, according to a story by Mark Sheldon of MLB.com on the club’s Web page.
The former Bangor High Schoool star and other Twins’ Triple-A players will remain with the Edmonton Trappers.
“The organization is choosing not to bring up players from Triple-A for three reasons,” Sheldon wrote. “First, the Twins are still trying to clinch the AL Central and home-field advantage in the playoffs. Second, the regular players will need to remain sharp for the postseason and third, Edmonton is competing in the Pacific Coast League playoffs and that team’s chances would diminish if the parent club raided its roster.”
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said in the story that the team will make September call-ups following the PCL playoffs but that promotions would be limited.
“There is little room in the clubhouse, and finite amounts of batting practice, bullpen sessions and playing time,” Sheldon wrote.
The 25-year-old Kinney was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 1 with a sore right shoulder. Kinney began the season in Edmonton. He was promoted to the Twins on April 19.
Prior to going on the DL, Kinney was 2-7 in 12 starts for the Twins. Kinney had an earned run average of 4.64. He struck out 45 and walked 33 in 60 innings.
Kinney returned to the minor leagues after coming off the disabled list.
