PORTLAND – An Auburn man who robbed four banks to feed his heroin addiction was sentenced Tuesday to seven years in prison.
William Morgan, 32, used a chrome-colored air gun to steal more than $23,000 from banks in Augusta, Lewiston and Gardiner over a 26-day span in March.
In federal court Tuesday, he apologized to several bank tellers in attendance, the Kennebec Journal reported.
Morgan, a former subcontractor, pleaded guilty to the robberies in May.
U.S. District Judge D. Brock Hornby ordered him to pay $18,552 in restitution and $400 in special assessments.
Morgan, who has a prior criminal record for alcohol-related offenses, will be subject to three years of supervised release.
