The weather is expected to be pleasant, so come one, come all, and have a ball! That’s the word from Frank Comeau, director of Bangor’s Parks and Recreation Department, who hopes you’ll pack up the kids and attend the Cascade Park Celebration from 10 a.m.

The weather is expected to be pleasant, so come one, come all, and have a ball!

That’s the word from Frank Comeau, director of Bangor’s Parks and Recreation Department, who hopes you’ll pack up the kids and attend the Cascade Park Celebration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday Sept. 7, at the park on State Street in Bangor.

There you will find live entertainment featuring the Late Edition at 10 a.m., Maine-ly Music Barbershop Chorus at 11 a.m. and the Queen City Big Band at noon.

After lunch, you’ll be entertained by the Thomas School of Dance at 1 p.m., Sentimental Journey Band at 2 p.m., the Twin City Cloggers at 3 p.m. and the Bangor Band at 4 p.m.

There’s free parking, and shuttle bus service, from the Wing Park parking lot across from Eastern Maine Medical Center, and $3 buys you a duck and a chance to win prizes in the Cascade Park Duck Races.

The youngsters will love the bounce tent, pony rides, climbing wall and lots of games and face painting.

There will be food to eat, and representatives of the Bangor Police D.A.R.E. program offering helpful information.

The Cascade Park Celebration is an annual event enjoyed by many. Comeau hopes this year is no exception and, if it does rain, attend the event on Sunday, Sept. 8.

The Rev. David Abbott, pastor of the Belfast United Methodist Church, invites you to join in helping the family of 1-year-old Lucas Howard, the son of Scott and Mary Howard of Stockton Springs.

The grandson of Ricky and Jackie Howard and great-grandson of Vaughan and Norma Howard, all of Searsport, Lucas has had numerous operations to remove brain tumors, and now is undergoing chemotherapy and facing more surgery to remove another tumor.

The parents are spending much of their time with Lucas at a Boston hospital while his young brothers are being cared for at home.

A benefit supper for Lucas Howard begins at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Belfast UMC, 23 Mill Lane, Belfast.

The menu includes American chop suey, with a vegetarian selection, tossed salad with dressing, biscuits and rolls, bars and cookies, coffee, tea or a cold drink.

Admission is by donation only, and a large poster card will be available for those who want to sign their names or write a short message of support or encouragement.

If you cannot attend, but would like to help the family, you can write a check payable to Belfast UMC, mark it for Lucas Howard, and mail it to Belfast UMC, 23 Mill Lane, Belfast 04915.

On behalf of the SAD 48 Music Boosters, secretary Joan Leavitt invites the public to attend its annual Fall Auction at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, beside the Sebasticook Chamber of Commerce building next to Wal-Mart in Palmyra.

Bob Tardy returns as guest auctioneer for the fund-raiser that helps the organization provide support for special trips, equipment and events for district music students.

United Way of Eastern Maine has launched its Acts of Kindness campaign, which it will kick off during a Community Rally at noon Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Bass Park in Bangor.

The public is invited to enjoy a free lunch provided by Shop ‘n Save. To ensure Shop ‘n Save has enough meals for everyone, you are asked to RSVP by Friday, Sept. 6, by calling Rita Daigle, 941-2800, or e-mail ritad@unitedwayem.org.

The Web site at www.ActsOfKindness.US encourages people to perform acts of kindness beginning Wednesday, Sept. 11.

People are encourage to participate by filling out their AOK promise card at the Web site, in schools, at local Shop ‘n Save stores or Merrill Bank locations, or on a form at the Bangor Daily News.

Examples of acts of kindness range from schoolchildren visiting nursing homes or raking leaves to serving meals to the homeless. Co-workers or neighbors can help repair homes of the elderly or low-income people.

Bangor is one of five sites for the 13th annual Walk for Brain Injury Prevention.

The Bangor event begins with registration at 8 a.m. and the walk at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Maine Center for Integrated Rehabilitation, 12 Stillwater Ave., Bangor.

Prizes and raffles will be offered throughout the event. Similar walks will be held the same day in Winslow, Hallowell, Portland and Kennebunk.

All proceeds benefit the Brain Injury Association of Maine.
