AUGUSTA – To help scrap-car handlers comply with a new state law, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection will offer special training, beginning with an evening session in Portland on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The program will be repeated in Bangor on Thursday, Oct. 17; in Presque Isle on Thursday, Oct. 24; and Augusta on Thursday, Nov. 7.

The training will cover the new requirement that mercury-added automobile component parts (switches and lights) be removed from motor vehicles before being flattened, crushed or baled. Car manufacturers will pay operators $1 for each switch removed.

Those who attend the training will receive a video demonstrating correct removal and storage of the switches, along with a storage container. A guide on dealing with environmental issues commonly faced by operators of junkyards, auto graveyards, auto recycling facilities and crushers also will be given to participants.
