HAMPDEN – Foxcroft Academy used a well-balanced attack to score early and often in defeating Hampden 42-0 in Friday night’s high school football season opener at the Weatherbee School field.

“Our line just did a tremendous job on both sides of the ball,” junior defensive back-running back Lincoln Robinson said. “We had a lot of initiative to come out and play well tonight and shut down their offense: Coach has to do 50 pushups a day for a week every time we get a shutout.”

Danny White put the Ponies on the board quickly with a 60-yard punt return two minutes into the game.

Quarterback Josh Withee scored on a 2-yard dive up the middle following a Mike Larrabee blocked punt in the first quarter. Withee’s only completion in six attempts was a 35-yard screen pass to Josh Sands to give the Ponies a 38-0 lead. Sands led all rushers with 87 yards.

Robinson added two more touchdowns for the Ponies: one on a 1-yard dive and another when he returned an interception 40 yards in the third quarter after defensive lineman Tre Merrill tipped the ball at the line of scrimmage.

Sands led the Foxcroft Academy defense with seven tackles, while Kyle Dalton led the Hampden defense with 12 tackles.

“We just couldn’t control the line of scrimmage,” Hampden head coach John Sparacio said. “We’re still learning our system and we’re a mentally young team.”

Orono 28, Old Town 12

At Old Town, quarterback Jason Coleman – a senior transfer from Georgia – passed for two touchdowns and a two-point conversion to lead the Red Riots to the win.

Coleman had a 20-yard TD toss to Lance Cowan and a 17-yard scoring strike to Jeffrey Miller as the Red Riots built a 28-0 lead after three quarters. The Riots led 20-0 after one quarter.

Ryan Levesque and Nick Dwyer scored on 8-yard runs for Orono.

Chris Rand put Old Town on the board with a 17-yard fourth-quarter run while Chris DeGrasse scored the second Old Town TD on a 20-yard pass from Jason Adams.

Livermore Falls 27, Rockland 6

At Rockland, Ranson Hoar rushed for 168 yards on 28 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Andies past Rockland.

Matt Belmonte scored off a 15-yard pass from Dain Hanson for Livermore Falls while Hoar tallied on 63- and 1-yard runs. Brad Bryant added a 55-yard punt return to help the Andies sprint out to a 20-0 halftime lead.

Livermore Falls had 224 yards rushing.

Rockland made it 20-6 in the third quarter when Austin Podziewski barged in from the one. Podziewski made 20 solo tackles from his linebacker position. Mike Curtis was Rockland’s leading ground-gainer with 52 yards on 21 carries.

At Mount Desert, senior running back-inside linebacker Dave Zabala ran for 159 yards on 22 carries and scored three touchdowns as Mount Desert Island opened with a victory to match last year’s win total.

Zabala, who missed most of last season with a concussion suffered in a car accident, also had three catches for 41 yards and registered a team-high nine tackles, including a sack.

Zabala caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dale Beaudoin in the second quarter and expanded MDI’s lead to 14-0 with a 44-yard TD scamper in the third period.

John Bapst answered when George Keefe hauled in a 43-yard pass from Josh Keefe, but the Trojans salted the game away in the fourth quarter when Beaudoin threw a 14-yard TD pass to Jon Dow and Zabala ran 16 yards for the final score.

Beaudoin completed six of 11 passes for 81 yards and two TDs. Outside linebacker David Muise had eight tackles for MDI.

George Keefe was the Crusaders’ leading rusher with 39 yards on 12 carries and cornerback Pat Healy led the team in tackles with eight.

At Farmington, Mt. Blue quarterback Chelsea Allen and receiver Andrew Beaulieu connected twice in the first half for touchdowns to lead the Cougars over Lawrence of Fairfield.

Beaulieu and Allen hooked up in the first quarter on a 70-yard pass to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead. Beaulieu and Allen connected again for a 31-yard score in the third quarter. Allen went 4-for-8 for 114 passing yards in the contest.

Ron Digravio gave Mt. Blue some additional insurance in the fourth quarter after he returned an interception 17 yards into the end zone. Mt. Blue’s Ryan Hutchison led all rushers with 166 yards on 19 carries.

David Costigan scored the lone touchdown of the game for Lawrence on a 1-yard run in the second quarter.
