Saturday’s schedule for the opening weekend of high school football is much lighter than Friday night’s, but the games are no less intriguing.
Stearns at Winslow, 1:30 p.m., Poulin Field: This is one of the best cross-class games as it matches traditional pigskin powers. The Minutemen of Millinocket and Black Raiders have combined to win four gold balls. in the last eight years. Winslow has two in B and Stearns two in C.
Winslow returns 1,000-yard rusher Ricky Vigue at tailback and plenty of experienced players blocking for him up front. The Minutemen feature solid linemen and a versatile skill player on offense in quarterback Derek DiFrederico.
Maine Central Institute at Dexter, 1 p.m.: The Huskies of Pittsfield visit the Tigers in a matchup of programs trying to get back into the playoffs. Both teams return plenty of experience with 12 starters back apiece, but the Tigers are coming off a 5-4 season while MCI is shaking off a 2-7 campaign one year after winning the Eastern Maine Class C title.
MCI alumnus and former Stearns coach Tom Bertrand returns to his alma mater, which features more speed than size. The Tigers could be more potent offensively with depth in the skill positions, but the interior lines are untested.
