BIDDEFORD – The suspect in the fatal beating of a Canadian tourist in Old Orchard Beach was denied bail in his first court appearance in the case Friday.

Benjamin Humphrey, 29, is charged with murder in the death of 47-year-old Derek Rogers, of Russell, Ontario, a band member in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Rogers was the victim of a random attack during an early morning walk on the beach in the Ocean Park neighborhood on July 31, according to police.

Humphrey, who grew up in Presque Isle, and his girlfriend, 23-year-old Aimee Pelletier, were arrested last month at a shopping mall in Rapid City, S.D., and returned to Maine on Thursday.

Pelletier, who faces a charge of hindering apprehension, is accused of helping Humphrey escape and tampering with evidence at the crime scene.

The two were not required to enter pleas Friday in Biddeford District Court.

Pelletier’s bail was set at $20,000 cash or a piece of property worth $100,000, with certain conditions.
