HERMON – With conditions such as they were Tuesday, the Brewer and Hermon boys soccer teams had to be well-hydrated for their game. The Witches actually ran low of water early in the first half, and the Hawks graciously gave the opposition their water supply.
Brewer didn’t return the favor – at least during the game.
The Witches persevered through temperatures in the 90s and a wind that kicked up dust from the dry field. They took a three-goal lead at halftime en route to a 6-2 victory.
Brewer, now 2-0, got two goals apiece from Joey Caron and Isaac Bell, one goal each from Andy Frost and Will Prescott and two assists from Zack Bouzan-Kaloustian.
Frost and Bouzan-Kaloustian combined to score the first goal with 13:30 left in the first half. The goal broke things open for Brewer, especially because much of the first half was played in the midfield. Neither team had many good chances early.
“Once you break the ice and get the first goal, things usually go OK and that’s what happened today,” Frost said. “It was tough to get things going. The fields are really dry and it was tough to get a touch on the ball.”
Caron scored twice in about 21/2 minutes to give Brewer a 3-0 lead going into halftime. John Rohn and Frost assisted on the goals.
“It was just possession,” Bouzan-Kaloustian said of the offensive burst after Frost’s goal. “Once you get possession you see the open people and that’s when you get the opportunities.”
Prescott scored 1:01 into the second half off a Bouzan-Kaloustian pass.
Matt Quimby made six saves on 16 shots for the Witches.
The Hawks (1-1) fell into Brewer’s offsides trap twice in the first half. Hermon coach David Hamel said his team had never played against that defensive scheme.
“This was the first time we had an opportunity to try to play with that, and it didn’t work,” he said. “… Brewer just pressured us. We got the ball but once it was at our feet we had no time to do anything with it. They pressured us hard and fast.”
Joey Schacht scored both Hermon goals. Josiah Curtis and Jason Shorey each crossed a ball to Schacht for an assist. The Hawks had 12 second-half shots after just four in the first.
Hermon’s Phil Cayford stopped nine of 16 shots.
