The official death toll from the attacks, including the 19 hijackers, is 3,044 – 2,811 at the World Trade Center, 189 in Washington and 44 in Pennsylvania. Here is a list of victims with ties to Maine:
. Cmdr. Robert Allan Schlegel, 38, of Alexandria, Va., graduated from high school in Gray, where his mother still lives. Schlegel was killed at his office when American Airlines Flight 77 smashed into the Pentagon.
. Jackie Norton, 61, and Robert Norton, 85, of Lubec were retirees headed to Santa Barbara, Calif., for her son’s wedding. The couple was aboard American Airlines Flight 11 when it crashed into the World Trade Center’s north tower.
. James M. Roux, 43, a Portland lawyer, was aboard United Flight 175 when it hit the south tower on one leg of his journey to Thailand. Roux graduated from Lewiston High School, Bowdoin College and the University of Maine Law School and served as a decorated paratrooper.
. Stephen Ward, 33, had started his job as an equity reporting accountant for Cantor Fitzgerald and Co. three weeks before the attacks. Ward attended Gorham High School and graduated from the University of Maine. His office was on the 101st floor of World Trade Center’s north tower.
. Carol Flyzik, 40, of Plaistow, N.H., was aboard American Flight 11 for a business trip. Her parents, Janet and Charles Flyzik, of Parsonsfield, didn’t know she was traveling Sept. 11 until their other daughter called them.
. Robert Jalbert, 61, of Swampscott, Mass., was aboard United Flight 175 for a business trip. The former Marine graduated from St. Dominic Regional High School in Lewiston in 1959 and has family in the area.
