WINDHAM – A construction worker was killed Wednesday when heavy winds blew down a wall that was under construction at Windham High School.

Michael Butts, 35, was crushed at about 5 p.m. by a 27-foot-high, 57-foot-long concrete block wall, Windham police Sgt. Peter Fulton said. Nobody else was hurt.

Butts, who worked for Shaw Brothers Construction Inc., was working on a $33 million addition to the high school that will triple the school’s size and eliminate 37 portable classrooms, a portable adult education office, a portable cafeteria and band room.

Fulton said Butts was working a tamping machine, preparing the ground for concrete, when the wall fell as the winds grew heavy.
