BANGOR – After rain postponed a big early game with Nokomis of Newport to Thursday night, Bangor soccer coach Adam Leach had no choice but to feel a little greedy.
With a game against in-town rival John Bapst Friday afternoon, Leach not only wanted a win, he wanted a comfortable win in which he could play plenty of subs to keep his players fresh.
Mission accomplished.
The Rams used crisp passing and excellent communication to dictate the play and dominate the tempo from the outset en route to a 7-0 victory over the Warriors on a cool evening at Bangor High.
The 2-0 Rams outshot the Warriors 13-9 in the first half and built a 2-0 lead as Jeremy Kenney took a pass from Mike Larochelle, who was stationed outside the right post, and blasted the ball into the net from the left wing four minutes, 44 seconds into the game.
“These guys have played together all summer, all winter, all year last year, and it’s really clicking very well,” Leach said.
Bangor made it 2-0 with 11:28 left when Larochelle scored on a shot outside the left post after getting a nifty assist from striker Ryan Jeffrey, who corralled and passed the ball in one swift motion to the left side.
“They’re probably one of the best Bangor teams I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” said coach Bill Freudenberger, whose Warriors are now 1-1. “I think if they play like this, they ought to challenge for the Eastern Maine championship.”
Bangor put the game away in the second half. Stopper Tim Woodcock scored 3:52 into the second half on a shot from the right side off Jeffrey’s pinpoint corner kick from the right. It was 4-0 almost 10 minutes later as Nick Larochelle curled one in with his left foot off another great pass from Jeffrey.
“I was expecting complete domination, but 7-0 is a big win,” Jeffrey said. “I expect a lot out of this team because we’re really strong this year. I guess 7-0 may turn a few heads, but not so much for me.”
The last three goals came in the final 14 minutes. Backup striker Brett Mitchell blasted a loose ball about 55 yards from midfield over and by the goalie and into the net with 13:54 left. Sophomore striker Omar Conteh scored the last two in the final six minutes – the first on a kick from the right corner on a Sam Boss assist and the second on a breakaway after making a move to freeze a defender and causing two Warriors to collide.
