Friars blank UMaine McMorrow goal sinks Black Bears

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Shannon McMorrow’s goal with 121/2 minutes left in the game lifted the Providence College Friars to a 1-0 women’s soccer victory over the Maine Black Bears Friday.

McMorrow scored on a header off a BriAnne Bruni cross.

Caroline Haines made four saves on eight shots for 2-1-2 Providence.

Naomi Welsh registered three saves on 11 shots for 2-2 UMaine.

Men’s soccer

Colgate 4, Maine 1

At Orono, Reed Grimes scored a pair of goals to lead Colgate to its first win and hand Maine its first loss.

Rob Dow got Maine on the board first with an unassisted goal in the first half, but Colgate responded with four unanswered goals.

Jonathan Cook and Sean O’Sullivan also scored for the visitors. Cook, O’Sullivan, Peter Bourquin and John Gelman each assisted on Colgate scores.

Josh Sjostrom had five saves on 19 shots for the 1-1-1 Black Bears. Will Martin led 1-1-1 Colgate with five saves on eight shots.

Volleyball

Texas-Arlington beats UMaine

At Boulder, Colo., Caley Smith tallied 15 kills to lead Texas-Arlington to a 30-18, 30-23, 30-19 victory over UMaine in the first round of the Colorado PowerBar Invitational.

Barol Bozikis had 12 kills and Amber Pack 10 for the 4-3 Mavericks. Smith racked up 44 assists.

Leah Guidinger led the Black Bears with 11 kills. Carmen Gabriel made 26 assists.

Suzuki sponsoring Heisman

The Heisman Trophy, the most prestigious award in college athletics, will now officially become “The Heisman Trophy presented by Suzuki.”

The Japanese-based auto and motorcycle manufacturer announced Friday it has purchased the right to link its name for three years with the statuette, college gridiron’s equivalent to the Oscar. Over the last 67 years, the Downtown Athletic Club of New York has given the annual award to some of the game’s greatest players, including O.J. Simpson, Roger Staubach and Bo Jackson.
