Lynx roll to victory Brewer defense trips up MCI

LINCOLN – Tyler Gardner scored three touchdowns to lead the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx to a 41-0 high school football victory over the Old Town Indians Friday night.

Gardner carried the ball nine times for 94 yards and three touchdowns.

Gardner scored the first touchdown of the game on a 30-yard run. Chris Kyes added a 10-yard run before Gardner scored again from nine yards out. Gardner scored once more from 19 yards to close out the Mattanawcook first half scoring.

Nick Ireland added a 10-yard run in the third quarter and Jason Murchison scored on a nine-yard run in the fourth quarter for the Lynx. Tom Lasko connected on five of six extra point attempts in the win. The Lynx defense held the Indians to one first down.

At Pittsfield, the Witches limited the Huskies to 99 yards of offense while earning the victory.

Court Rancourt scored on a 34-yard run in the first quarter for the Witches, while Josh Caldwell’s 18-yard scoring run in the third gave Brewer some breathing room.

The Witches netted 264 yards.

Ryan Bennett turned in a 15-yard TD jaunt. for Maine Central Institute. Josh Lasselle registered two sacks.

Foxcroft 12, Winslow 6

At Dover-Foxcroft, the Foxcroft Academy Ponies snapped Winslow’s 24-game winning streak Friday night with a hard-fought 12-6 LTC football victory at Oakes Field.

Josh Sands’ interception at the Foxcroft 34-yard line with 43 seconds remaining preserved the victory.

Josh Withee put the Ponies on the board with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Matt Earnest with 8:47 left in the first quarter. Withee then hooked up with E.J. Imbert on a 23-yard scoring play with 4.4 seconds remaining in the first half to make it 12-0.

Winslow, the two-time defending Class B state champions, suffered its first loss since a 37-22 defeat to Belfast on Sept. 2, 2000.

The Raiders cut the deficit in half with 2:57 to play in the third quarter when Ricky Vigue took a screen pass from Josh LaPointe and turned it into a 43-yard TD play.

Winslow had a good scoring opportunity with about five minutes left, but had a touchdown pass called back by a holding penalty and was unable to convert.

Withee completed five of seven passes for 85 yards and the two scores for the Ponies. Josh Sands paced the running game with 36 yards on 10 carries. Lincoln Robinson added 29 yards on 12 carries and Danny White had 20 yards on six tries.

Vigue gained 44 yards on 17 carries for the Black Raiders while Derek Runnels had 13 yards on seven. LaPointe completed eight of 11 passes for 125 yards.

At Millinocket, senior quarterback John Lear threw for a touchdown and ran for another as the Class B Lions rolled past Class C Stearns.

Matt Welch and Lear each ran for a 4-yard TD in the first quarter. Jay Ames added a 20-yard TD reception in the fourth and Jeff Parenteau capped the win with a 2-yard dive.

The Lions piled up 309 yards of total offense and held the Minutemen under 100 yards for the game.

Stearns’ second loss of the season came in its second straight game against a proven Class B contender: The Minutemen lost in Week 1 to defending state champ Winslow.
