PORTLAND – The Portland Sea Dogs have scheduled a press conference today to make what they term a major announcement about their major league affiliate for the 2003 season, which has been rumored to be the Red Sox.

The press conference is set for 1 p.m. at the team’s home, Hadlock Field.

The Sea Dogs, who play in the Eastern League, have been affiliated with the Florida Marlins for the nine years of their existence. The Marlins announced Monday they are moving their team to North Carolina, which leaves things open in Portland for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox ended their eight-year affiliation with the Trenton Thunder in August.

The New York Yankees moved their Double-A affiliate from Norwich, Conn., to Trenton and announced a four-year agreement with Trenton Tuesday.

As of Sept. 6, major and minor league teams could contact each other regarding a new player development contract.

The Sea Dogs have won three Eastern League Northern Division titles (1995-97). They have missed the playoffs the past five seasons.
