AUGUSTA – A 14,000-member group representing Maine hunters and anglers is endorsing Michael Michaud in the 2nd District congressional race, but is giving both the Democrat and his Republican rival, Kevin Raye, A’s for their stands on outdoor issues.
The Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine’s political action committee said Michaud won its endorsement because of his support for SAM causes during his years in the Maine Legislature.
Raye received an A based on his answers on a survey by SAM’s PAC and an interview with its board. Michaud also received a top score on the survey.
According to survey responses, both candidates oppose creation of a national park in northern Maine’s woodlands and the introduction of wolves. Both support the state’s management plan for the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and oppose federal intervention in its management.
Both candidates also said they oppose any new federal restrictions on ownership, possession and use of firearms, SAM said.
