Bangor

Fly Fishing

The Bangor Museum and Center for History will present an indoor-outdoor event about fly fishing in the Penobscot region at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the 6 State St. location.

Visitors can enjoy a fly fishing demonstration, discussions and refreshments. An evaluator will be available to estimate the value of your vintage fishing tackle. Estimates of value will be done in return for a $5 donation to the museum.

Discussion topics are: the history and use of vintage tackle, the Thomas Fly Rod Company favorite flies that local fly tiers use and the impact of salmon fishing on the region.

Constitution Week

The week of Sept. 17-23 has been proclaimed as Constitution Week in the City of Bangor by mayor Michael R. Crowley.

The Frances Dighton Williams Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, part of the National society founded in 1887, is promoting the week of celebration in remembrance of the nation’s Constitution. America adopted its constitution 215 years ago.

Members of the organization encouraged churches in the Bangor area to join Bangor Hose #5 Museum in ringing their bells on Sept. 17 to signify the beginning of Constitution Week.

BSO concerto competition

The Bangor Symphony Orchestra seeks high school music students from across the state to apply for the Maine High School Concerto Competition. The winning high school student receives an Annas-Cupp award of $500, as well as a chance to play his or her winning piece with the BSO. Application deadline is Oct. 15.

Octoberfest

Octoberfest will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in downtown Bangor.

Festivities include:

. Beer tent and food vendors.

. Children’s activities in Pickering Square, Hannibal Hamlin Park, and Norumbega Park provided by Bangor YMCA and Maine Discovery Museum.

. Hansel and Gretel Contest for adults, with judging at 4 p.m. Singles and couples come dressed, or cross-dressed, as Hansel or Gretel. Judges include Mayor Mike Crowley and city councilors.

. Street dancing and music, including acoustic guitarist Alex Rosenblatt, a German band, and the MoonPuppies.

Garden study school

The Garden Club Federation of Maine is sponsoring a garden study school, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 27-28, at the Penobscot County Extension Office, 307 Maine Ave.

Topics include basic botany for gardeners, houseplant basics, plant propagation, soils and growing and care of orchids.

Instructors are Dr. Lois Berg-Stack, UMaine Cooperative Extension specialist in ornamental horticulture; Bert Johnson, florist; Hildy Ellis, graduate assistant in the UMaine landscape horticulture program; Gleason Gray, Extension educator, and orchid grower, Louise Snow.

Bangor Public Library seeks artists

The Bangor Public Library art committee seeks artists to exhibit in the library’s lecture hall and stairwell gallery in 2003. Artists should submit an application with 5 slides or photographs of work before Oct. 15, 2002.

The art committee will notify the artists and groups chosen for exhibitions by the end of November.

Artists need not be professionals to apply. The committee encourages students of all ages and groups of artists to apply. Applications are available at the adult circulation desk.

Maine Technology Institute Grants

Mainley Sensors of Orono and Transpose LLC of Bangor Companies received $10,000 seed grants from the Maine Technology Institute. The awards will be used for research and development projects or for technical or business planning consulting.

Orchid Plant Sale

The Eastern Maine Orchid Society will hold an orchid plant sale 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Bangor Mall. Approximately 450 plants will be available. Experts will be on hand to answer questions.

Candidates Forum

The Maine Development Foundation and the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce will co-sponsor a forum for gubernatorail candidates at a 7:30 a.m. breakfast Monday, Sept. 30, at the Bangor Civic Center.

The 90-minute forum, part of the Maine Development Foundation’s annual meeting, will be moderated by Maine PBS host Don Carrigan. It is slated to feature Democratic candidate John Baldacci, Green party candidate Jonathan Carter, Republican candidate Peter Cianchette and Independent candidate John Michael.

Spiritual singer to perform

Spiritual singer Roosevelt Andre Credit will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, and in the worship services at 9 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23 at the First United Methodist Church on Essex Street.

Credit, a performer of classical, sacred and secular music, is the section leader and bass soloist at St. Peter’s Church in Manhattan. He appeared in the Sacred Concert at Alice Tully Hall as a guest artist with Wynton Marsalis, and with the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Duke Ellington Orchestra. He also has performed with Arcady Music Festival and with Arcady Ragtime Band.

Brewer

Ballroom dance

The Back Door Dance Studio and the Northern Lights Dance Studio will co-sponsor a ballroom dance 7-11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Northern Lights Dance Studio, Main Street in Brewer. The 16-piece Foxcroft Academy Alumni Jazz Band will play favorite ballroom dance tunes. A free tango lesson will be offered 7-8 p.m.

Admission is $15 per couple or $8 for singles. Proceeds from the dance will be donated to a scholarship fund to benefit first-year music students from the Dover-Foxcroft area.

Hampden

Fall festival

Second annual Fall Festival and Hampden Public Safety Day will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Weatherbee School-McGraw School Complex in Hampden.

The Modern Woodmen of America, McGraw Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization and Hampden Public Safety have pooled their talents to present the festival. Festival proceeds will benefit the Hampden Community Playground Improvement group, which seeks to replace the current wooden structure playground located behind McGraw School.

Festival events include pumpkin decorating, pony rides, horse drawn carriage rides, face painting, fall photos, hay house, Bounce house, kids toy box, food concessions and a bake sale.

Hampden Public Safety will offer Lifeflight helicopter, a smoke trailer, a rollover simulator, a jaws of life demonstration, child fingerprinting, Bingo the Clown and his friends, Sparky, McGruff, Darren and Smokey.

Admission is free.

Old Town

Basket makers get grant

The U.S. Department of Human Services has awarded a $150,000 grant to the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance. The grant will provide support for the marketing and selling of baskets through the Wabanaki Arts Center Gallery in Old Town, to support the gallery’s artist in residence program and for demonstrations to the public.

More than 100 basket makers from four tribes – the Aroostook Band of Micmacs, the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Passamaquoddy Tribe and the Penobscot Nation – will participate in the project.
