Independent clothier to close after 80 years

BANGOR – One of the region’s last independently owned retail clothing stores will close its doors in mid-November.

The Maine Coat Town – Sklar Big & Tall Store in the Broadway Shopping Center will hold a liquidation sale that will include a contest with prizes, owner David Sklar, 61, announced this week.

“I’m shutting down all the aspects of the retail business and taking early retirement to pursue other interests,” he said in a phone interview Wednesday. “There’s nothing I see on the horizon for excitement and growth in this industry. I’ve been there and done it.”

Sklar sold his first pair of shoes in his father’s store when he was just 13 and his first suit when he was 15. For almost 40 years, he’s run the 80-year-old family business, first in Old Town, then Bangor.

Ben Sklar, his father, died in April 1963, a month before his son was to graduate from the University of Maine. Determined to follow the values set forth by his father, David Sklar completed his business administration degree and took the reins of the family business.

In 1981, he started Maine Coat Town, selling outerwear long before Burlington Coat Factory opened a store in the state. Sklar’s stores were the first in the state to carry the Gunnesax line popular with teenage girls during the 1970s. He moved to the Broadway location five years ago, combining his big, tall and regular size men’s store and his outerwear line.

Sklar has been an active member of Rotary and, with his wife Martha, has supported community and charitable events. He also is a member of the Beth Israel synagogue in Bangor.

A Denver-based management consultant firm will conduct the liquidation sale of inventory and fixtures, he said. Prices will be reduced by as much as 75 percent.

Sklar and his family plan to relocate to Florida.
