A crash on College Avenue in Orono Tuesday night resulted in damage to two cars and a citation for the driver whose view was obstructed by shaving cream on his windshield.
Douglas Libbey, 23, of Lyman told police that he hunched down in the driver’s seat of the 1994 Nissan Altima so he could see what he could through the windshield, which his friends had covered with shaving cream.
It was 9 p.m. and dark out when Libbey was near Munson Road on College Avenue and rear-ended a car driven by Cindy Biron, 23, of Orono, who pulled over to the right side of the road to drop some friends off, reported Sgt. Gary Duquette.
Libbey caused an estimated $1,500 damage to his car and an estimated $2,000 in damage to Biron’s car, Duquette said.
He was summoned on a charge of operating a motor vehicle with an obstructed view.
Old Town firefighters and police were called to 56 High St. Wednesday afternoon after a resident left macaroni cooking on the stove and it burned.
Neighbors reported that the smoke alarms were going off and called 911 about 5:41 p.m. Some smoke was coming from inside the home and a firefighter reported that he knew from the smell that it was food that had burned, rather than timbers from the home.
The door was left unlocked and authorities had no problem in getting in and isolating the problem.
Inside the kitchen they found the pan on the stove that was “cherry red” it was so hot, said Assistant Fire Chief James Lavoie. Inside the pan was a “charcoal brick” of what had been the macaroni.
Lavoie said the first floor apartment and part of a second floor apartment were vented because of the smoke. He said that likely the fire flared up in the pot, but that it extinguished itself, unable to reach the high ceiling above it.
Lavoie said that the incident not only serves as a reminder of the effectiveness of having working smoke alarms but also of not leaving something cooking unattended.
One of two people arrested for hosting a loud toga party in Orono that extended into Sunday morning faces a drug charge after police reported finding cocaine in his pocket.
In addition to being charged with disorderly conduct, Brenden Cronin, 20, faces a charge of possession of a Schedule W drug. Jennifer Reese, 20, was also charged with disorderly conduct after police returned a second time to their Park Street residence on a report of a loud party.
Officers Scott Wilcox and Casey Miller revisited the apartment at 2 a.m. Sunday, more than two hours after they had issued a disorderly conduct warning to organizers of the party, a warning that included the stipulation that if the police were called back again, someone would be going to jail.
While searching Cronin after his arrest, police found a small plastic bag with a white substance in his left front pocket. The substance tested positive for cocaine in a field test.
