PRESQUE ISLE – Two people escaped serious injury Thursday morning after a two-car crash on U.S. Route 1.

Deborah Saucier, 39, of Presque Isle was southbound about 10:45 a.m. when she slowed down to make a left turn into Golden Gate Trailer Park.

Two cars behind her passed her 1997 Chevrolet on the right. A third car, driven by Wendell Perry, 79, of Presque Isle, crossed the centerline and passed Saucier on the left, just as she was starting her turn.

Perry’s 1999 Buick then struck Saucier’s car.

Both Perry and Saucier were wearing seat belts, and the air bags in their cars deployed, according to Officer Jeffrey Mechalko of the Presque Isle Police Department.

Perry and Saucier were taken by Crown Ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle for treatment of injuries, the officer said. Both were treated, then released, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Perry’s car was a total loss. Saucier’s car had an estimated $5,000 in damage.

Perry was issued a summons for operating a vehicle left of the centerline. Mechalko said driver inattention on Perry’s part also contributed to the crash.
