PORTLAND – Two more former Cheverus High School students are accusing the Rev. James Talbot of sexually abusing them, according to a lawyer representing the Jesuit’s alleged victims.

Talbot, 64, was arraigned Thursday in Suffolk Superior Court in Massachusetts on charges that he molested three Boston College High School students in the 1970s. He pleaded innocent to the charges.

Talbot also faces allegations of abuse in Maine. He was transferred to Cheverus in 1980.

For years, Michael S. Doherty was the only Cheverus student to accuse the popular coach and charismatic teacher of sexual impropriety. Talbot was suspended from teaching after Doherty sued Talbot in 1998.

Now two other men say Talbot abused them while students at the school several years after Doherty’s experience, according to Roderick MacLeish Jr., the lawyer who represents them.

MacLeish would not identify either man.

He said one has filed a negligence suit against the Society of Jesus in Boston and Boston College High School, alleging that Talbot’s supervisors knew or should have known about Talbot’s behavior and taken action to stop it before he was transferred to Cheverus. MacLeish said the other man is preparing to file a similar lawsuit.

Maine’s statute of limitations may preclude criminal charges for the alleged crimes here, though lawyers are exploring the possibility.

Doherty and his family welcomed the news of Talbot’s indictment in Massachusetts. He was indicted on one count of rape, one count of assault with intent to rape and five counts of indecent assault and battery.

“We hate to have more people added to this list, but there is some bittersweet feeling knowing that justice may finally be served and that this guy will be off the street and behind bars where he belongs,” said Doherty’s sister, Courtney Oland.

In one of the two Cheverus cases, the alleged victim says he was molested repeatedly during the late 1980s and into 1990. The other case involves an alleged rape that occurred in 1991, MacLeish said.

Cheverus had no indication Talbot had been involved in any sexual misconduct, said Rev. John Keegan, the high school’s president.

“I think there were 10 allegations against Father Talbot prior to his coming to Cheverus. Clearly it was more than we ever knew. We never knew of any when he came here,” Keegan said Wednesday.

Keegan also said the school only recently became aware that two other Cheverus students were accusing Talbot of abuse and that the men did not contact the school directly.
