For more than a half century, the Bangor Junior League has sponsored one of the finest antique shows in Maine.

This year, the League continues that tradition and begins a new one by completely revamping its fall fund-raiser to appeal to an even wider audience with a new name, a new format and a new location.

The 52nd Annual Antiques & Giftware Show & Sale begins with a Preview Evening Reception and Auction from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Spectacular Events Center, 395 Griffin Road, Bangor. Admission to the preview is $30 per person.

The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at Spectacular Event Center.

Show admission is $5, and an Appraisal Fair will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The appraisal fee is $8 for one item, $15 for two, $20 for three and $5 for each additional item.

The League has added three events that should appeal to show-goers.

Throughout the weekend, antique cars will be on display, and Friday night’s live auction features former television news director Don Colson as guest auctioneer.

Saturday’s show will feature the live filming of “New England Antiques Appraisal Fair,” hosted by Bangor native Denise Keniston, which can be seen at 9:30 p.m. Saturdays on WPXT-51.

Proceeds from the event benefit community projects.

Avon representative Pam Baker reports the Avon Foundation is sponsoring a sale of Crusade Pink lipsticks to raise funds to fight breast cancer.

District Manager Windy Keith has teamed Avon with local Fashion Bug and Lane Bryant stores to have Avon representatives selling lipstick in special pink ribbon cases for $4 each on Saturday, Sept. 21, at those stores in Bangor and Dover-Foxcroft.

Purchasers receive a $4 coupon toward a store item, and proceeds from lipstick sales benefit breast cancer research, awareness and access to care.

Anyone interested in starting a support group in his or her community for grandparents, aunts and uncles who are raising their grandchildren, nieces and nephews, is urged to contact Families and Children Together by Thursday, Sept. 26, to obtain materials to apply for funding of that group.

The support group effort is a collaborative program of Families and Children Together and the University of Maine Center on Aging. In addition, funding may be obtained through a Generations United grant.

Dr. Bob Arnot of NBC television returns as featured speaker for the annual Mature Lifestyle Expo beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, and 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Augusta Civic Center.

The Searsport Lioness Club again hosts its popular Authentic German Supper at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Searsport Lions Club on Prospect Street.

Admission is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children.

Marty Page reports “this is one of two annual public suppers” the club sponsors to raise funds for “many local community projects, including a scholarship fund and local charities.”

Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Volunteers will host their first annual Craft Fair and Chinese Auction on Friday, Oct. 18, and Saturday, Oct. 19, in Ellsworth.

The group seeks items for its Chinese auction, and crafters to rent tables at the fair.
