ORONO – The Pony Express delivered seven rushing touchdowns as Foxcroft Academy rolled to a 50-7 high school football victory over the Orono Red Riots Friday night.
“We’re not satisfied yet because we don’t feel like we’ve put a whole game together offensively and defensively,” Foxcroft running back Danny White said. “We’re hoping to pull everything together soon because we’ve got some tough games coming up.”
White scored on a 34-yard run on Foxcroft’s first possession of the game and added an 11-yard run later in the quarter. Lincoln Robinson took over for the Maroon and White in the second quarter, adding scoring runs of 5 and 6 yards, respectively.
White carried the ball five times for 133 yards while Robinson rushed seven times for 44 yards.
Trey Merrill added two points for the Ponies from the defensive side of the ball with a sack in the end zone that started off the second quarter. He finished with six tackles.
The Ponies opened the second half with a touchdown run of 3 yards by Josh Sands to open a 36-0 lead. Sands carried the ball 10 times for 87 yards. Joey Caparrelli carried the ball twice for the Ponies for 76 yards, including a touchdown run of 30 yards, before Bobby Gilbert finished off Foxcroft Academy’s scoring with a 49-yard run off a trap play.
Orono added a score late in the fourth quarter on a 17-yard run by Mardy Simon who carried the ball six times for 29 yards. Orono’s Lance Cowan led all receivers with 12 receptions for 125 yards. Jason Coleman completed 16 of 23 passes for 142 yards for the Red Riots.
“We didn’t play as well as we could have tonight, but even if we played our best I’m not sure we could have stayed up with them,” Orono coach Wally Covell said of the Ponies. “I don’t’ think anybody else in the league will come near them except maybe Bucksport which might have a chance, but they just have too many weapons.”
